Welcome to the Active Citizenship website
The Taskforce on Active Citizenship was established to advise the Government on the steps that can be taken to ensure that the wealth of civic spirit and active participation already present in Ireland continues to grow and develop.
The Taskforce conducted a nationwide consultation process to hear your views on what it means to be an active citizen in 21st century Ireland and produced a set of recommendations in its final report in March, 2007. To access those recommendations, see the Report of the Taskforce on Active Citizenship below.
As recommended by the Taskforce, an Active Citizenship Office was established under the Department of the Taoiseach. The Government Chief Whip, Mr. Pat Carey, T.D. was assigned special responsibility for Active Citizenship and appointed a Steering Group to oversee the implementation of the Taskforce’s recommendations in October, 2008. This Group is chaired by Mary Davis, Managing Director, Special Olympics Europe and Eurasia.
The most recent report on active citizenship is now available on the website – Active Citizenship in Ireland: Progress Report 2007-2008 and Annual Plan 2008-2009.
