The Taoiseach assigned special responsibility for active citizenship to Chief Whip, Mr. Pat Carey, T.D. and established the Active Citizenship Office under his Department. Minister Carey appointed a Steering Group on Active Citizenship in October, 2008 to oversee the implementation of the recommendations of the Taskforce on Active Citizenship. Mary Davis, Managing Director of Special Olympics Europe and Eurasia was asked by the Taoiseach to Chair the Steering Group. A Progress Report was completed in December, 2008 which provides an outline of progress achieved in the implementation of many of the Taskforce recommendations.
